Eastern Michigan University (EMU) offers its most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship, to incoming first-year students. This scholarship covers full tuition, room, and board for four years, with a total value of around $100,000. Recipients, known as Presidential Scholars, are active participants in The Honors College, where they enhance their academic journey with opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement, and leadership development. High school seniors who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for this scholarship.
Established in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School, EMU holds a rich history as one of the earliest teacher training institutions in the U.S. It was the first normal school founded outside New England and became Michigan State Normal College in 1899, the first in the country to offer a four-year curriculum. In 1959, it transitioned to Eastern Michigan University.
